Wisconsin Connection

The state has played a huge role in the development of our largest project, the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. IceCube is run by an international collaboration of around 250 scientists, with the University of Madison–Wisconsin as the lead institution. The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center (WIPAC), previously the IceCube Research Center, was developed to handle administrative tasks like reporting to the National Science Foundation, hiring construction staff, and making equipment purchases.

Over 100 million dollars have been spent in Wisconsin to enable construction of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

More important than the things we got from Wisconsin are the people. Many staff, students, and researchers are Wisconsin natives, coming from around the state to contribute to IceCube, the largest neutrino detector in the world.
