In 1911 the race to the South Pole began between Norwegian Roald Amundsen and British Naval Officer Robert F. Scott. Amundsen reached the Pole in December of 1911, Scott in January 1912. Their expeditions paved the way for the creation of the world’s southernmost research station, now operated by the National Science Foundation.
